Hugh Biggar
Writer Hugh Biggar, whose childhood adventures in Africa, arrived in Poland as a young Peace Corps volunteer, assigned to teach English at a high school. Poland had largely been cut off from the Western world during the Cold War and English teachers were in short supply.
With resources limited, Biggar is forced to be creative in the classroom, including a baseball game, an unexpected discussion of the birth process, and an Easter egg hunt, with often hilarious results.
Biggar gets lost geographically and spiritually but finds himself too. Lake Town concludes with a return to Poland in 2023 to assist Ukrainian refugees and with a new understanding of the meaning of the word home.
LAKE TOWN: TWO YEARS WITH THE PEACE CORPS IN POLAND is now available here.
